How Social Justice can get you a Job
1:00pm to 2:20pm | OM 3632

Past and present TRU law students and pro bono lawyers will be talking about how social justice can get you a job!  They will showcase ground-breaking cases that would not have been possible without their efforts and they will describe how these experiences have impacted their careers so far. *** Free pizza provided ***

This showcase will highlight cases now before the Federal Court, the Federal Court of Appeal, the Peruvian courts, and the World Bank’s compliance ombudsperson – all made possible as a result of TRU law students’ work in Transnational Lawyering.  Civil society leaders and human rights lawyers will explain how they have worked with TRU students to help make these cases happen.  A panel of current and past TRU law students will describe how their work on these projects made them more attractive to firms and directly translated to their legal careers.

    • the progress you’re seeing - What’s working? Where do you see change happening? What have you done that’s making a difference? What have you tried that you’ve learned from?
    • the opportunities the A2J movement offers – What doors has it opened for you? How are you using legal tech to improve access to justice? And how would you like to use it?
    • the challenges you face when trying to improve access to justice - What’s getting in your way? What could make it easier? How have you overcome an obstacle?

Exploring Law Reform Priorities for BC
4:00pm to 5:30 pm |
OM 2621
The BC Law Institute (BCLI) and its division, the Canadian Centre for Elder Law (CCEL), is BC’s independent, non-partisan law reform body. BCLI and CCEL are consulting on law reform needs and priorities for BC and want to hear from the TRU community. Laws govern a wide range of relationships, how business is conducted, and how our communities function.  Join Executive Director Kathleen Cunningham for an interactive discussion about law reform needs in BC across populations and sectors.  Questions will include: Where is the law out of step with current trends and society’s needs?  What areas of the law could benefit from clarification? Where are there gaps in the law?  What are the emerging issues?
