AI Justice Challenge

Picture
What is the AI Justice Challenge?
The AI Justice Challenge is part of a larger initiative by BC Government, the Court Digital Transformation Strategy (CDTS). The goal of the strategy is to transform the experiences of all court users – the judiciary, lawyers, Crown counsel, Indigenous representatives, law enforcement, court staff, self-represented litigants and citizens – into a seamless experience that maintains public confidence, protects people and increases fairness and sustainability. The strategy focuses on delivering court user-centred digital services that are fast, easy to navigate and affordable.

The Justice Sector is considered ripe for AI solutions, and Ministry of Attorney General is actively engaging with the innovator community to help solve their business challenges with AI. These solutions are meant to provide the public with better access to the justice system, allowing citizens to navigate their legal matters more quickly, easily, and affordably. The AI Justice Challenge offers a huge opportunity for both government and the innovation community to impact millions of people across the province.

Where are we now with the AI Justice Challenge?
We are now in the second phase of the Challenge Process. This stage allows technology companies to develop MVP’s of viable solutions to four innovative needs selected previously by the courts system.

These needs include:
  • Smart Online Guide to help someone complete online services easily, accurately and in their preferred language;
  • Intelligent Reviewer system that can intelligently parse a document with a focus on using machine learning to pull appropriate data elements out of flat images to feed relevant information to users and systems.
  • Auto Transcriber to create faster and cheaper transcription and;
  • Smart Court Inquirer is needed to develop the optical recognition of forms, calendarization, notification and enhanced wayfinding, both to Courthouses and the services within.
